Derek Johnson & "Team Badger" Raises $4,500 for American Cancer Society

2004 Chicago Marathon - American Cancer Society
Today my brother Derek ran his first Chicago Marathon - Derek also happens to run Aurora's Research & Analysis Support Bureau in Madison - and, in the process, along with his two friends Greg and Jim, raised over $4,500 for the American Cancer Society. Here're Derek's words after the race:
I just wanted to thank everyone again for their donations (and words of encouragement) to the American Cancer Society and for helping my level of motivation in running the Chicago Marathon. My two college friends and I raised just over $4,500 for ACS and it was really a great experience being a charity runner!

I unfortunately didn't hit my four-hour goal, plagued with some side aches that started around Mile 4 ... I managed to work through them until Mile 19 when I just couldn't run consistently any longer and walked a little more than I wanted to from that point on into the finish line - official time of 4:37:36.

Albeit a short career as a "marathoner", I'm officially declaring my retirement from the 26.2 mile torture test and sticking to half marathons from here on out as a better test of my personal endurance by leaving a little more of myself on the pavement.

Congratulations to Derek, Jim and Greg - these three guys looked like they were in pretty good shape after the race - better, for sure, than the crew sent down to cheer them on, as they stop for snacks in downtown Chicago below (I'm taking the picture):

Note the "No Loitering" sign outside the 7-Eleven where we stopped for breakfast snacks...
